Whats so unique about Chetan Bhagat?

Chetan Bhagat is one more buzz word in India today. He has got unique style of writing which makes simple things very interesting. You can easily relate to his stories.
The thing I like about his books is he has small little revolutionary thoughts which he conveys in a very simpler way through his characters. I can feel his love for India in every story by him. And I feel he is trying to change the thoughts of Indian youth through his books. He might not be great writer as Arundhati Roy but he is reaching to roots of India. He criticizes the system, the characters in his stories are passionate and try to do all sort of weird stuff to make it possible which is sometimes very unrealistic.
The only thing I don’t like is at times he gets too dramatic like Bollywood movies that the story doesn’t give realistic feel and reader get feeling ‘yeh to sirf movie (CB ke stories) me hota hein’.
Do read CB’s books he is not that bad. J

Chetan Bhagat, well, the thing which I belive works for him is his vocabulary, or rather the lack of it. He has a very simple way of writing. His English is very much similar to you and me. We do not need a dictionary when we are browsing through one of his books. I don't necessarily agree with you that he is reaching the roots of India. Infact he is far from it. He sells predominantly in Metros and although he has tried to convey a good message each time there are times when his way of story telling gets predictable and unrealistic. You said it right, Chetan Bhagat's books are much like Bollywood movies where you can predict the climax of the book after you have completed the first ten pages. Let me put it this way, he is the Akshay Kumar of Indian Literary field. Might not be the best at what he does, people like him anyways.

When I say he reaches to roots common young crowd is reading his books, how many of us have read great literature. His books are easily available also on railway stations of Indore as well. He is certainly not limited only to metro cities neither his stories as his Three Mistakes is based on Gujrath

Indore is a big city Didi... a cultural capital of India.
Anyway, for me roots is the bottom of economy and rural places still far from the modern thoughts , and the issues that we talk may not be a part of their daily lives.
Well being dramatic is okay.. its a style of art. Any kind of art, painting, movies or literature. And if he wants to reach out to common people, or all kinds of them, he needs that drama. as we all know commercial movies are more popular than art films, or more realistic films. if he doesn't spice it up, he won't be able to capture different markets, segments of society.
